Covid 19 Second Wave: Situation grave in Jammu, better in Kashmir

JAMMU, Apr 20: Jammu is witnessing a massive upsurge of Covid-19 positive cases almost on a daily basis. While the numbers are also increasing in Kashmir valley, the situation is comparatively better than Jammu region.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admissions have increased three-fold since April 1, 2021 in Jammu region. There are 62 people in the ICUs in different hospitals of Jammu division. On the contrary, there are 23 patients in the ICUs across Kashmir valley. On April 1, 2021, there were 14 patients undergoing treatment in various Covid dedicated ICUs in the hospitals of Kashmir valley.

Jammu has seen young and old, both kinds of patients getting admitted in the isolation wards of the hospitals across Jammu region due to falling oxygen saturation. The number was 55 on April 1, 2021 and the number as of April 20, 2021 has reached 343. This is a nearly six-fold increase in the number of isolation admissions in hospitals across the Jammu region.

On the contrary, against 178 isolation admissions on April 1; Kashmir region has 464 people in various dedicated High-Density Units. This is a two-fold increase and an indicator that the situation is comparatively better in Kashmir valley. Twenty days and more than ten thousand cases later, a comparative analysis of the Jammu division and Kashmir division shows that the perception of Kashmir being worst-hit by Covid-19 second wave is, in fact, wrong.

Though the overall number of active cases, deaths in Kashmir is more than in Jammu, the number of Covid-patients who need ICU has increased three-fold in Jammu and not even two-fold in Kashmir.

The number of active positive cases in Jammu region today (5575) is six times higher than the 724 cases on April 1, 2021. For the same time period, the number of active cases grew three-fold in Kashmir from 2150 cases to 7895 cases. Even the requirement for Isolation beds grew six times in Jammu region and two times in Kashmir valley in the past twenty days.

On April 1st 55 Covid Positives in Jammu division and 178 in Kashmir division were on isolation beds in different hospitals of the Union territory. The number stands at 343 in Jammu and 464 in Kashmir today.

Since Jammu district has the highest number of cases in Jammu division and Srinagar district in Kashmir, a comparative analysis was drawn. Active Positive cases rose six times higher in Jammu district since April 1st and four times higher in Srinagar. 34 people from Jammu and 39 from Kashmir died due to Covid within twenty days.
