Srinagar, Jan 12: Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, witnessed the coldest January night in 8 years at minus 7.8 degree Celsius.
A meteorological department official said the minimum temperature in Srinagar plummeted to minus 7.8 degree Celsius, resulting in freezing of water bodies including Dal Lake as well as water supply pipes.
“After 8 years, Srinagar recorded the coldest night. Last time such severe January cold hit the city was on January 14, 2012, when the mercury dipped to minus 7.8,” said the Met official.
Pahalgam – the famous health resort which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra was the coldest place in the Valley where minimum temperature was minus 11.7 degrees.
Gulmarg a famous ski-resort recorded a low of minus 10.0 degrees while the mercury in Qazigund in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 9.3 degrees Celsius.
Kokernag town recorded a low of minus 9.9 degrees Celsius while Kupwara town in north Kashmir registered a low of minus 5.6 degrees Celsius last night.
Jammu city recorded 6.9 degrees Celsius, Katra 4.4, Batote 4.9, Banihal recorded 4.0 and Bhaderwah recorded minus 0.1 degrees Celsius as the night’s lowest temperatures.
