GMC Jammu students demand mass promotion, delay in final exams

Date:

Respected Mam,

We appreciate the way the Doctors and all other front-line workers are working at such time of emergency. Coming from the GMC family, (I am a pre-final student of GMC JAMMU) we have some serious concerns which I want to highlight:

We want to highlight the University’s decision to conduct the examination at this time of Corona crisis. Recently, the date sheet for our professional examinations of Pre final, 2nd Prof and Ist Prof etc batch were released by college authorities and later published on the website of Jammu University.

Even at such critical time of crisis, the examination dates have been released despite of HRD ministry (Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal) declaring that all universities will promote all students except final year students and that too exams for even the Final year students should be conducted only after the month of July.

We understand that Final year students cannot be promoted looking at the importance of Final year as compared to other years in college but is it so with 2nd prof and Prefinal batch too?

We are told that we don’t come under HRD but don’t we have to follow some norms for the safety of the students?  Top colleges like IIT BOMBAY, KANPUR and many other leading colleges have already cancelled exams. Why can’t the same happen here since the situation is turning worse? J&K is witnessing a sharp rise in the number of cases every day. Are we not students? What about our safety?

Primarily, we don’t have any problem in giving exams since we have been appearing for multiple exams from last 4 years but here are some queries and problems which we want to highlight:

  1. If the exams are conducted on time, what would be the security and precautionary measures provided to students? Is the college and university ready to take responsibility if someone gets infected? The top bureaucrats and even the doctors are catching infection, how come the students are immune to such infections?
  2. Most of the areas in the Union territory are under Red zone and the new quarantine guidelines have further made it difficult for students coming from Kashmir, Delhi and Ladakh, areas of Chenab Valley and other districts of Jammu to appear for the exams. Most of the students had just reached their homes after being in quarantine in their home districts.
  3. Looking at the dramatic rise in no of cases every day and even the senior epidemiologists of our country predicting that peak can occur in later half of June and month of July, if the same trend continues and exams couldn’t be conducted, will it not be loss on the part of the students in terms of their time which they could have devoted to their final year if we had been promoted based on our previous year marks and internal marks of pre-final?
  4. What if the student tests positive in quarantine, he won’t be able to appear for exams, how will he cope with the burden in the final year?
  5. We need to come in contact with the patients during our practical examinations, this is the biggest challenge to our security, what if the students get exposed to infection?

Final prof is most important part of MBBS moreover, there are no online classes going in our college which is pushing us way behind other colleges and this can place a lot of problems in the future including the internship and appearance for our PG entrance whose pattern is going to change very soon.

Since exams have been asked to be conducted, we don’t know what is the future prospect. A lot of our crucial time has already been wasted.

It is high time that concern is shown primarily towards the safety of students rather than conducting exams looking at the present scenario. Therefore, we request you to highlight this matter.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully
