When it comes to writing horror novels, visualisation of surroundings is just as important as the source of terror. In Turkey Creek, we get both. The imagery of the haunted creek is so strong that it instils that fear at the back of your mind, every time you see a character move an inch, you fear for their lives, or something much more horrid than death.
The Past and the Present
The narration of the tale centres around two timelines, one of the origins of the curse and one of the consequence years later. The graphic scenes of rape, torture and murder are revolting enough to twist anyone’s insides. To believe that the book drew inspiration from real slave stories is to accept the terror that befalls the characters in the book as genuine and deserved.
Overview
As a mystery-horror, the book is intense, fascinating and quick-paced. But read this only if you are comfortable with graphic depictions of violence and gore.
